AI estimating for contractors

Short answer: AI estimating for contractors means software that reads plans and pulls quantities, or turns a tech's spoken notes into a written estimate, with a person reviewing before the price goes out. In this directory contractors have used Beam AI, Togal.AI, Drawer AI, Countfire, Monco, Quotr.ai, BlueBoost and ChatGPT; the table compares them on facts from each tool's page.

I'm Daniel Massaad. Estimating is where AI for contractors shows up most clearly in public case studies: plan takeoffs that used to take a week, first-pass symbol counts, and techs who talk through a job instead of typing a proposal. Quoting & estimating is the densest task tag on Trades AI Use Cases for a reason. This page pulls the clearest sourced examples together so you can see what shops actually did — with the original link — instead of another "AI takeoff software" landing page.

The three kinds of AI estimating

  1. Plan takeoff. Software reads PDF drawings and counts or measures for you. Used by plumbing, electrical and general contractors in this directory (Beam AI, Togal.AI, Drawer AI, Countfire, Monco, Quotr.ai).
  2. Measurement and roof reports. Aerial or satellite imagery turned into roof measurements you price from. Mostly roofing and solar (EagleView, Roofr; see AI for roofers).
  3. AI-written proposals and follow-up. A tech's spoken notes or a custom GPT become a written estimate. Service plumbing and HVAC, and roofing repair in our entries (BlueBoost, ChatGPT).

AI plumbing takeoffs: go from 1–2 bids a week to 8–9 without hiring another estimator

Harner Plumbing

Harner Plumbing, a full-service residential and commercial plumbing company in Mantua, Ohio (founded 1977), was doing its takeoffs by hand with tools like FastPIPE. One bid could take up to a week, so the team could only get out one or two bids a week. Since December 2024 it has used Beam AI, which reads PDF plan sheets and pulls out pipe lengths, fittings, fixtures and equipment, with the vendor's QA team reviewing each takeoff before it's delivered. Beam AI reports that Harner saves about seven days per takeoff and increased bid volume 4.5x; Assistant Project Manager Danell Zarrelli is quoted on Beam AI's site saying the team went "from 2 bids a week to 8–9, with no extra hires." Figures are vendor-published and not independently audited.

AI takeoff for general contractors: send quantities straight into the estimate, no re-entry

Stevens Construction

Stevens Construction, a general contractor in healthcare, industrial and data center work, runs preconstruction with just four estimators. Its team does AI-assisted quantity takeoffs in Togal.AI and uses Togal's native integration with its estimating platform, Ediphi, so quantities flow into the estimate already mapped to the right cost items instead of being exported to spreadsheets and re-entered. When drawings change, estimators review the updated quantities and decide what to accept. Director of Preconstruction Nick Burkell says setup took an afternoon: they exported their cost database, Togal mapped it, and they were running after a short training. Estimating engineer Evan Lopes says the four-person team now turns out as many estimates as local GCs with much larger departments. Vendor case study; no hard figures claimed.

Use AI as the first pass on electrical takeoffs

Intermountain Electric

Intermountain Electric's estimators run drawings through AI for first-pass lighting, power and receptacle counts, branch routing, panel and lighting schedules, and drawing stitching, then review and correct it before anything goes into the estimating system. The case study says one high-volume takeoff that used to take several 15-hour days was done in a few hours, and that the AI gets branch measurements about 95% of the way before human QA.

AI estimates for plumbers: techs talk through the job and get a customer-ready write-up

Cornel's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning

Cornel's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, a family-owned shop in the Portland, OR metro area, has had its technicians write estimates with BlueBoost since June 2024. Instead of typing a few technical lines on a tablet, a tech talks through what they found and the AI turns each option into a clear, detailed write-up a homeowner can follow, which matters on big jobs like repipes and trenchless sewer replacements. BlueBoost reports, from its own dashboard for June 2024 through Oct 11, 2026, more than 17,500 estimates on jobs totaling $13.4M in sales, a 26.4% higher average ticket and 10% more estimates per job versus jobs written without it, and an estimated 1,460 hours of writing saved (assuming five minutes per estimate). Vendor-reported figures.

Bid more work without hiring another estimator

WTC Electric

Family-owned WTC Electric in Charlotte, NC faced rising bid volume, driven partly by data-center demand, and couldn't find another estimator. It moved takeoffs to AI device detection and automated branch routing, with the vendor's human concierge team handling peaks and poor-quality drawing sets. Drawer AI reports a 70% reduction in takeoff time on large projects and device detection accuracy above 95%.

Build a custom GPT that writes code-compliant roof repair estimates from a voice prompt

Leakbusters Roofing

Owner Richie Kleti's team built a custom GPT, tied to historical job data and manufacturer specs, that turns a short voice prompt into an itemized, code-compliant Florida repair estimate. New hires can produce accurate estimates without waiting for senior staff to price every job. The team also uses an AI sales coach in role-play "sales cage match" sessions, where reps are mic'd up and get feedback on tone, objection handling and what to do better.

Price a £2.5M lighting refurb with automatic symbol recognition

Bojen Electrical

UK contractor Bojen Electrical uploads tender drawings and builds its takeoff with automatic symbol recognition, keeping a permanent, editable count list for each job. The estimator says that working through the drawings this way also gives him a clearer picture of how the job will actually run. He priced a roughly £2.5 million lighting refurbishment of an Oxford research building entirely in the tool, splitting each floor into zones.

Turn weeks of electrical quantity takeoff into hours

Rudolf Fritz GmbH

German electrical contractor Rudolf Fritz (about 650 employees) uses automated quantity takeoff from PDF plans for bids. In the first five months after its March 2026 rollout, it processed 364 plans across 18 projects, detecting 71,073 elements and measuring 85 km of cable tray. Takeoffs now take hours instead of weeks, and the team says it can price more inquiries instead of passing on projects for lack of capacity.

How to choose AI estimating software

  1. Match the trade. Plumbing takeoffs, electrical symbol counts and roof estimates are different products. Drawer AI, Countfire and Monco are built for electrical; Beam AI lists instant takeoffs for HVAC, plumbing and steel.
  2. Check where the quantities go. Does it feed your estimating system, as Togal.AI did for Stevens Construction, or hand you a spreadsheet to re-key?
  3. Decide who does QA. Your estimators, or a vendor review team (Beam AI's done-for-you option), and how long that takes.
  4. Plan takeoff or on-site write-up? Office estimators need takeoff; service techs quoting in the home need voice-to-estimate like BlueBoost at Cornel's Plumbing.
  5. Read the source. Bid-volume and time-saved numbers in these entries are reported by the vendor or the contractor, not audited by us.

FAQ

What is AI estimating for contractors?

Software that reads plans and pulls quantities (takeoffs), or turns a tech's spoken notes into a written estimate, so an estimator reviews and prices instead of counting and typing. Entries on this site cover plumbing, electrical, general contracting and roofing.

Can AI do a full takeoff on its own?

In the sourced entries it's used as a first pass or with review. Intermountain Electric uses Drawer AI as a first pass, and Beam AI says its done-for-you takeoffs are QA-checked by people before delivery.

Does AI takeoff software work for electrical contractors?

Several tools in this directory are built for it: Drawer AI, Countfire and Monco count electrical symbols and read panel schedules or tender documents, and Quotr.ai counts symbols across plan sets. See the Intermountain Electric, WTC Electric, Bojen Electrical, Rudolf Fritz and RL Electric entries.

How much does AI estimating software cost?

None of the plan takeoff tools in our directory (Beam AI, Togal.AI, Drawer AI, Countfire, Monco, Quotr.ai) list dollar prices in our entries, so ask each vendor for a quote. Roofing measurement tools are different: EagleView and Roofr publish per-report and monthly prices on their own sites (see the table above).

Can I use ChatGPT for estimates?

Some contractors do. Leakbusters Roofing built a custom GPT for roof-repair estimates, and remodelers in this directory use ChatGPT to write scopes of work and estimating formulas. You still own the numbers, so check every line.
