AI for tradesmen

Short answer: Tradesmen use AI most often to answer and book phone calls, speed up takeoffs and estimates, dispatch techs, code invoices to jobs, follow up on leads, and run safety briefings. Every example below links to a sourced entry with the original write-up; start with the job that is already costing you money.

I'm Daniel Massaad. I ran a solar company from $0 to $60M, and I've sat through enough "AI for tradesmen" webinars to know most of them never name a real shop. People search that phrase when they want a map: what is AI actually used for on jobs, in the office, and on the phones — and which contractors have published a write-up you can check. I built Trades AI Use Cases as that map. Every example below links to a sourced entry on this site. Figures are from those sources and are vendor-reported unless the source says otherwise.

Where AI shows up for tradesmen today

Phones: AI receptionists and voice agents

The phone problem never went away for tradesmen — techs under a sink, crews on a roof, a homeowner who calls the next shop if nobody picks up. These entries are the clearest public examples:

Let an AI receptionist take messages while you're under a sink

Frankie's Plumbing

Owner-operator Frank Galvin of Frankie's Plumbing in San Diego can't answer emergency calls mid-job, so Jobber's AI Receptionist picks up, takes the caller's details and leaves him a clear message to return between jobs. "The AI takes a message. It jots down the information very well... we're able to get their business, and we don't lose any money," he says. The case study also credits Jobber's quoting, scheduling and payment tools as the company grew from about $100K to an estimated $800K a year.

Let an AI voice agent book and dispatch a Sunday-night furnace call

Riley Plumbing Heating & Air

Owner Lawrence (Brook) Riley in Northern Nevada put AI voice agents and automated dispatch on his phones in 2025. On the Sunday before Christmas, with nobody working, the AI agent answered a no-heat call, scheduled it for the next morning and dispatched a tech, who closed a $1,060 ticket. Riley says his call-booking rate went from well under 50% to consistently over 80%, and ServiceTitan reports 19% revenue growth and a 170% increase in average deal size.

Move AI from overflow to front-line call answering, step by step

High Ground Service Pros

High Ground (about 150 employees across NJ, NH and ME) started with AI only on overflow and after-hours calls in place of voicemail. It then moved AI to the front line one day a week, then two, then all five, with warm transfers to CSRs for escalations. The company reports AI now handles 75% of inbound calls, the abandon rate fell from 10% to 2%, AI books 81% of bookable calls, $250K-$300K a year in CSR costs were avoided without layoffs, and outbound SMS campaigns bring in $100K-$250K a month.

AI speed to lead for HVAC and plumbing: reach retail-partner leads in 30 seconds, not days

Homer Home Service

Homer Home Service, a multi-brand HVAC, plumbing and electrical platform in the Southeast (brands include Comfort Dynamics, McKeon and Ebens), used to take two days to a week in peak summer to call back leads from its national retail partners. Between November 2025 and January 2026 it expanded Avoca from after-hours calls to a full deployment across its brands: an AI agent named Beatrice ('Bea') answers first, texts leads who don't pick up, books simple appointments end to end, and sends follow-up 'happy call' texts, while CSRs take the escalated calls. Avoca reports time to first contact fell to about 30 seconds, booking rates rose 25-30% across brands, and Bea handles 200 to 500 extra customer interactions a day. Vendor-reported figures.

Estimating and takeoffs

This is the densest category on the site. Plumbers, electricians, GCs and roofers all publish takeoff and estimate stories:

AI plumbing takeoffs: go from 1–2 bids a week to 8–9 without hiring another estimator

Harner Plumbing

Harner Plumbing, a full-service residential and commercial plumbing company in Mantua, Ohio (founded 1977), was doing its takeoffs by hand with tools like FastPIPE. One bid could take up to a week, so the team could only get out one or two bids a week. Since December 2024 it has used Beam AI, which reads PDF plan sheets and pulls out pipe lengths, fittings, fixtures and equipment, with the vendor's QA team reviewing each takeoff before it's delivered. Beam AI reports that Harner saves about seven days per takeoff and increased bid volume 4.5x; Assistant Project Manager Danell Zarrelli is quoted on Beam AI's site saying the team went "from 2 bids a week to 8–9, with no extra hires." Figures are vendor-published and not independently audited.

AI takeoff for general contractors: send quantities straight into the estimate, no re-entry

Stevens Construction

Stevens Construction, a general contractor in healthcare, industrial and data center work, runs preconstruction with just four estimators. Its team does AI-assisted quantity takeoffs in Togal.AI and uses Togal's native integration with its estimating platform, Ediphi, so quantities flow into the estimate already mapped to the right cost items instead of being exported to spreadsheets and re-entered. When drawings change, estimators review the updated quantities and decide what to accept. Director of Preconstruction Nick Burkell says setup took an afternoon: they exported their cost database, Togal mapped it, and they were running after a short training. Estimating engineer Evan Lopes says the four-person team now turns out as many estimates as local GCs with much larger departments. Vendor case study; no hard figures claimed.

Use AI as the first pass on electrical takeoffs

Intermountain Electric

Intermountain Electric's estimators run drawings through AI for first-pass lighting, power and receptacle counts, branch routing, panel and lighting schedules, and drawing stitching, then review and correct it before anything goes into the estimating system. The case study says one high-volume takeoff that used to take several 15-hour days was done in a few hours, and that the AI gets branch measurements about 95% of the way before human QA.

AI estimates for plumbers: techs talk through the job and get a customer-ready write-up

Cornel's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning

Cornel's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning, a family-owned shop in the Portland, OR metro area, has had its technicians write estimates with BlueBoost since June 2024. Instead of typing a few technical lines on a tablet, a tech talks through what they found and the AI turns each option into a clear, detailed write-up a homeowner can follow, which matters on big jobs like repipes and trenchless sewer replacements. BlueBoost reports, from its own dashboard for June 2024 through Oct 11, 2026, more than 17,500 estimates on jobs totaling $13.4M in sales, a 26.4% higher average ticket and 10% more estimates per job versus jobs written without it, and an estimated 1,460 hours of writing saved (assuming five minutes per estimate). Vendor-reported figures.

Dispatch and scheduling

Home-service fleets use AI to assign the right tech, balance the board, and cut dispatcher headcount when volume scales:

AI dispatch software for HVAC, plumbing and electrical: match the right tech to every call

Cardinal

Cardinal, a residential HVAC, plumbing and electrical company serving Madison and Milwaukee, Wisconsin (founded 1984, part of Redwood Services since 2025), had dispatchers assigning calls by location and gut feel about which technicians were "good." It switched to Probook, which uses a real-time model to assign the right technician to each job. Probook reports that Cardinal's average ticket across trades rose more than 20% year over year in the first six months, and that the company added four acquisitions, 14 technicians and 13,000+ customers without growing the front office at the same pace; dispatchers now have time to debrief every tech after every job. Cardinal also added Probook's AI CSR for after-hours and overflow calls that used to hit voicemail, which the vendor says booked 850+ jobs and $715,000+ in revenue in its first four months at an 82% true booking rate. Figures are vendor-published and not independently audited.

Centralize multi-location dispatch with AI auto-assignment

Del-Air

Florida's Del-Air (eight locations, 220+ technicians) put AI on dispatch first. Within three months it centralized dispatch at one office and went from 22 dispatchers to 10, with about 90% of call assignments now made automatically. It then made AI the first touch on all inbound calls: in May the AI handled 16,000 calls and resolved 74% of them without a person.

Let AI balance technician schedules across the board

Deep Dive Plumbing

Richard and Felicia Flournoy opened Deep Dive Plumbing in Cartersville, GA in June 2025 and added ServiceTitan's AI layer that September. After the AI started balancing technicians' schedules, techs worked 8% fewer hours while earning 20% more. Richard says $10,000 of revenue now takes a tech 30 hours instead of 55, and revenue per hour worked went from $180 to $325, with seven technicians in the first year.

Job costing and bookkeeping

Back-office AI that codes invoices, maps bills to jobs, and keeps job-cost reports trustworthy:

Cut construction bookkeeping time in half with automated AP coding

Shrock

Shrock grew from a family Amish construction business into several entities (custom homes, restoration, prefab), and manual AP and credit-card entry kept coding costs to the wrong job or cost code. It automated AP and card entry with structured approvals and real-time job costing across entities. The controller reports bookkeeping fell from 26-30 hours a month to 12-16 per entity, with job-cost reports leadership can now trust.

AI invoice coding for contractors: an agent reads vendor bills and fills in the job and GL code

Perry Contracting, Inc.

Perry Contracting, a construction contracting firm in Norwood, Ohio, coded every vendor invoice by hand: project managers marked up paper invoices with the job and GL account, and a long-tenured accounting manager keyed them into the accounting software. With that manager nearing retirement after 30 years, the company had IT firm N Solutions build an AI agent on Microsoft Copilot that reads each invoice, works out the likely GL code and job details, and prefills the entry. The invoice then goes to the project manager in Microsoft Teams to review and confirm; nothing posts without a human check. A Power App shows each PM what is outstanding, and approved invoices are imported into the accounting software automatically. N Solutions estimates the process will save Perry 200 to 300 hours a year and captures the accounting manager's know-how so the next person can take over.

AI back office for remodelers: connect Claude to JobTread for proposals, vendor bills and job-close audits

Element Design Build

Element Design Build, an eight-person design-build remodeler in Hudson, Ohio, uses Anthropic's Claude as the link between its existing software: JobTread for project management and job costing, Fireflies for call transcripts, and Microsoft 365. Owner Vlatko Demrovski records prospect calls and consultations with Fireflies, then has Claude summarize them and help prepare JobTread proposals from templates and historical job costs; he says proposals that took 60 to 90 minutes now take 10 to 15, and a $150,000 kitchen estimate that took two days often takes about three hours. On the accounting side, an AI agent helps input vendor bills, match purchase orders and budget line items, and support reconciliation; job-close audits now happen on every job, and commission calculations that took a full day are done in under an hour with an audit trail. Claude also drafts schedules from the company's actual task durations. Element grew from $3.74 million (2024) to $3.92 million (2025) with the same headcount, which Demrovski largely credits to this setup. He reviews every output ("I read every single word") and tests spreadsheet instructions on one row first. Figures are owner-reported in Qualified Remodeler's 2026 Fred Case Award profile.

Marketing, follow-up and speed-to-lead

Speed-to-lead texts, AI content engines, and online quote tools that replace door-knocking:

AI content marketing for HVAC companies: replace paid ads with an AI content engine for your website

AirWorks Solutions

AirWorks Solutions, a family-run HVAC and plumbing company in Camarillo and Ventura County, California (co-founded by Kevin and Stephanie Allen in 2010), was paying for most of its growth with ads. In August 2025 it moved its website onto Cortex, CI Web Group's AI content and optimization engine, which publishes a steady stream of trade-specific articles and service pages each month, with human review before they go live. In June 2026 the company relaunched on CI Web Group's Hydra OS platform with a home-issue selector, instant quote estimator, rebate intake and a mesh of city-by-service pages. According to co-founder Stephanie Allen, as reported by the vendor, AirWorks turned paid ads off entirely and net margins grew from roughly 10% to 25%; brand-search click-through rose from 25.9% to 33.0% in launch week. The margin figure is client-reported, not audited, and the source is published by a CI Web Group company.

Automate speed-to-lead and estimate follow-up from CRM data

Brown Roofing

Connecticut roofer Brown Roofing connected an AI texting and follow-up platform to its lead sources and AccuLynx CRM to run speed-to-lead, post-appointment estimate follow-up, long-term nurture of aged leads, and cross-sell campaigns to past customers. Follow-up that used to be "ad hoc and inconsistent" is now standardized and trackable. The case study reports the year-to-date conversion rate rose from the low 70s to 86%.

Replace door knocking with instant online roof quotes as a lead magnet

TrueWorks Roofing

After 5.5 years of generating work by door knocking, Houston's TrueWorks Roofing added Roofle's RoofQuote PRO to its website in September 2023, so homeowners can get an instant quote based on aerial measurements of their own roof (Roofle says its instant measurements are AI-enhanced). Owner Joel Patzke uses it mainly as a lead magnet and to forecast cash flow. Roofle's case study reports 15 to 20 extra leads a month, a few more closed jobs a month from those leads (the page says both 2 to 4 and 2 to 5), and revenue rising from $2.9M to $4.3M, while noting Houston storms also played a role. These are vendor-reported figures that haven't been independently audited.

Safety and crew training

Voice pre-task plans, photo hazard detection, and bilingual new-hire orientation:

AI construction safety software: voice pre-task plans and photo hazard detection for every foreman

Lee Construction Group

Lee Construction Group, a fifth-generation family-owned contractor in Charlottesville, Virginia with 175+ employees across concrete, metal framing and drywall, waterproofing and facilities divisions, had safety paperwork split between paper and a project management system used mostly for storage. It moved its safety program to Field1st: supervisors complete daily pre-task safety forms by voice (Voice1st), AI analyzes jobsite photos to flag hazards and suggest controls, and an in-app AI safety agent answers questions with guidance aligned to OSHA and company policy, with dashboards for leadership. Field1st reports that within the first several months 100% of supervisors were using it for daily pre-task planning, with faster documentation and better hazard closeout. Shelomith Gonzalez, VP of Strategic Operations, is quoted saying supervisors use it daily "because talking through a pre-task form is faster than filling one out." Results are vendor-published and not independently audited.

AI safety training for roofing crews: bilingual new-hire orientation with quizzes and certificates

Porter Roofing Contractors

Porter Roofing Contractors, a US commercial roofer with crews spread across locations, needed every new hire to get through workplace expectations and jobsite hazards before joining a crew, with proof they finished. Director of Safety Karlo Bernardino put the company's existing safety material into Kwizie, which uses AI to draft questions that workers answer inside the training video, then sets pass scores and issues a certificate on completion. Porter runs parallel English and Spanish programs covering orientation, fall protection, rigging and material handling, hot work, equipment and vehicle operation, HAZCOM and silica awareness. Each completion produces a Porter Roofing-branded certificate with a QR-linked verification record. Kwizie reports 42 training workflows launched and 156 certificates issued across six certificate-enabled programs; figures were provided by the customer to the vendor.

Generate site-specific toolbox talks with an internal AI tool

Skanska USA Building

Skanska USA built an internal "Safety Sidekick" on generative AI trained on its own safety data and jobsite conditions. Field staff use it on mobile or desktop to plan toolbox talks and morning huddles, ask safety questions, and ask about photos of the day's site conditions. Early users report less time spent preparing safety briefings and better jobsite engagement. Skanska's advice to smaller contractors: start with data you already have, or use an off-the-shelf tool rather than building your own.
